Moss paint? Genius! Originally created by horticulturists keen to add interest to their gardens, this recipe couldn’t be easier. You’ll need several handfuls of moss, 12oz of buttermilk or a can of beer and a teaspoon of sugar. Mix in a blender until liquid and paint on the wall. Spray daily as it grows, as moss thrives when moist.
I have a date with the large, boring brick wall in my backyard. I’ll let you know how it goes. Just need to figure out what to write…
UPDATE: Here’s a great graphic explanation of how to go about making the moss paint. For those who’ve asked how long it takes to grow… I’ll let you know when I’ve gotten around to trying it! Have fun!
I’d love to see the updated photos! Can’t wait to try this, especially with all the rain we’ve been getting on the east coast of the US!!!
I am guessing this would work on an old, weathered wooden fence as well? I at least want to give it a try….great idea!
WOW! I would love to try this for an upcoming show. Wonder if I have enough time. . . Thanks!
would this work on a wooden fence or corrugated iron? i want to try it but I don’t have any brick laying around.
I would imagine it could work on a fence, since wood retains moisture. Corrugated iron? Not sure. I’d still give it a go. There’s very little investment involved, apart from your time. Let me know if it works!
I just love this! Would it be a bad idea to do this inside on exposed brick? Or would it attract bugs?
If I was a bug, I’d definitely be attracted to it! I think outdoors only, really…
spray daily with what? the mixture or like watering it.
With water, to keep it moist. Good luck!
I am in awe. I love it.
How long does it take to grow?? I have a party in 2 weeks and counting!
Does anyone know how long this takes to grow?
Does it harm the surface at all? I know that vines and (normally grown) moss usually damage brick and wood after long periods.
Is that a particular kind of moss?
This is fantastic! Can you tell me where I can get moss? Also, do you just paint a thin layer or do you apply a thick coat?
where do you get the moss?
omg its the dead of winter and Ive got to wait ..but oh my word ..Im so doing this ..I have just the rock and a broken statue and I may just have to build a brick wall so I can do it ?? but what to say ??? peace or my last name ..Something brilliant idk .. thanks for sharing.. so great ..
What a great idea, we just bought a brick house and I am going to do this with the numbers of our address… COOOOOOL I found you on pinteret http://pinterest.com/plankton/videos-tutorials-i-like/
I wonder if this would work if the mixture was painted on the trunk of a large tree. I will try just that in the early spring.
Would like to do it on a tree also , did it work?
I found a milkshake moss here that you can use. http://www.mossacres.com/product_moss_starter.asp
awesome
Many have asked the same question I have….” How long does it take to grow?” Please give some kind of estimated time frame.
I am wanting to cover old rocking horses in moss for a Kentucky Derby Gala..an anthropologie, organic garden feeling
Please let me know if my efforts will be in vain, and I should just glue moss to the horses. I would greatly appreciate input.
Thank you!!
I saw on another website that it can take as little as 3 weeks or as much as 8 depending on the moisture it gets.
I wanna try!
Reblogged this on thesparkleroom.
how about on stucco? I have that and would like to try it
Love, love, love it! A clever way to pretty-up the side of my garage. Now searching for the perfect mossy message. Thank you! Nadine
This is so cute! You should write something like the defintion of a word like love or family.
I found this site that shows how it grows….
